I know where my food comes from! Kindergardens Week 16

Yes it is true, I know where my food comes from.  So should you......

It comes from here.......

Old picture I know, but it is the only picture I could find where you can see all five beds! This is where most of my food comes from.

The other night we sat down for dinner.  We had free range beef and organic corn from a farm in the next town, tomato salad and zucchini from our garden.  We knew exactly where all of our food came from right down to the raw milk we drink.  I was really proud of us!

I think more people should know where their food comes from, don't you?

Just on a side note....I may have made a bit of a mistake with our hens.  They are only 19 weeks, I miscounted on the calendar.  Really they should be laying any day now, I still cannot wait for fresh eggs!

Are you loving this Kindergardens series as much as I am?  If so check out the other gardens over at The Inadvertent Farmer!

  1. It is so important that not only do we know WHERE our food comes from -but WHAT our food is! Whole food, baby--whole food!

Our motto is: We never eat a cow we didn't know. I hope soon to expand that to chicken and turkey as well. The reality is (my reality) is that it takes one step at a time to be a permanent change. I also have goals to garden this winter...we'll see...

  2. I couldn't agree with you more Cathryn! We ascribe to the "S.L.O.W." method of eating. Seasonal, Local, Organic, Wholesome. We like knowing our farmers and how they grow the things we eat. We don't eat a whole lot of meat anymore so I cannot see buying it in bulk. I know though that I can visit that farm and see how the animals are being treated and what they are being fed. And we only supplement the food we grow with stuff from the farms. We have chickens and are hoping to get some turkeys next year. We just started this adventure in the beginning of the year so I am all about the baby steps too!

  3. i'm afraid our family has a long way to go yet on the whole SLOW thing, but we certainly are enjoying eating fresh veggies right out of the garden this summer!

  4. Me too Kirsten, but I LOVE the idea and the process of trying to get there. Good job to you guys for making the extra efforts!

  5. Sounds like you are doing great! We're slowly getting there. You should post a recent pic of your garden! Would love to see what a lovely jungle it is now.

  6. Good for you! Knowing your food sources makes things taste sweeter :) Your raised beds are beautiful

  7. It is good for you and your kids to know where this food they eat comes from. We share with the neighbor kids too. Even I get surprised where stuff grows like Okra.

  8. So pleased to think about the great example your family is living out for others to see. Absolutely, everyone should know where their food comes from.

So, so hard to wait for those first eggs! *fingers crossed* They should come any day now!
